Up With Women Child Advocates Give Their Speeches

Briar Rose Perrier

Briar Rose Perrier’s mom, Bridget Perrier, is a woman who was determined to turn her life around despite the early trauma of child prostitution, homelessness and drugs. She was given shelter, life-skills training, counselling and, after 9 months of living in a temporary native women's housing facility with Briar, she was secured ODSP and affordable housing.

The result is that Briar’s mom now has her high school degree, a college degree from George Brown and a great job. Most importantly, Bridget has two healthy, happy children who are living the life that all children deserve.
Briar wants other families to have what she has, which is why she has written this speech.

When my mom was pregnant with me she had to live in a shelter because my dad was being really horrible to my mom. So she had nowhere to go so she lived in a shelter. My mom was put in a hard things for her children to have a good life. I never met my dad because he hurt my mom a lot and that’s not right to do that so why should I meet him. And my mom is doing a great job on her own and that’s why I think she is a great person. And her life is her children and she had a challenging life when she was a little girl. She doesn’t want me and my little sister to go through what she went through when was a little girl. She wants us to have a way better life then she did. We get to have the best birthdays ever and to have all the stuff we have. We also don’t have to live in a shelter. My mom loves us a lot. When I grow up I want to be a singer and dancer also a actress and every month I want to donate 1000 dollars to women and their children in shelters. Because I see lots of women on the streets with their children in their hands. Everyone should have a good life like I do. I also want to fight for women’s rights.

What I want for families is safe affordable housing, education, food and a roof over their head. Not to dig in the garbage. And for families to be clean. Clean water to drink. Warm clothes to be warm in. And for men not to abuse their wifes. And for kids not to be abused.
